Honestly? Families who fly out of SFO and are tired of making a 5am drive from the Peninsula. This is the hotel we land on for every early-flight weekend and every late-night arrival from somewhere three time zones away. It’s become our “we have a 6am boarding pass” safety net. If you’ve got kids, a rental car to return, and a flight that hates you, this is your place.

If you don’t have kids and you’re just grabbing one night between flights, it still works — but the pool and the buffet are what make it genuinely great for a family.

The Room

We booked a Deluxe Room and got one of the newly refreshed ones — and honestly, it felt like a real hotel room, not an airport hotel room. LED lighting, a tiled accent wall behind the bed, linens that actually felt fresh. The pillow swallowed my head in the good way. Our oldest noticed the accent wall before she put her bag down, which tells you something: this property used to be a place you tolerated, and now parts of it are a place you actually notice.

Quiet, too. We usually brace for the airport-hotel elevator-and-tarmac soundtrack. Here, we just… slept. Quiet enough that when Amelia got up at 5am to make coffee, she didn’t wake anyone.

One heads-up: not every room is refreshed yet. Ask at check-in — Bonvoy Platinum gave us a refreshed category without us pushing, but if you’re booking on a tight points budget, it’s worth confirming.

For the Family

The pool is the surprise. We expected what every airport hotel has — a chlorinated rectangle and a lifeguard who looks bored. What we got was a wide deck with big clamshell-style lounge chairs that our 6-year-old climbed into and immediately declared “the best bed of her life” (she slept in a real bed six hours later and apparently that was the worst). Warm water. Shallow zone. Enough space that even a crowded afternoon didn’t feel like waiting in line for wet concrete.

The breakfast buffet is the other win. Marriott Bonvoy Platinum free-breakfast benefit gets you the full thing — not a voucher for a bagel, the actual spread. Smoothie shots, a real egg station, bread that was warm when we touched it. Our tween went back three times and our youngest ate her body weight in mini-quiches. It’s the rare hotel buffet where the benefit genuinely feels like a benefit.

Starbucks tip: the lobby has a real Starbucks. Do the Marriott buffet on the Platinum benefit, then walk over and get your actual latte before you leave. That’s the play.

Food

The buffet is what you’re coming for. Solid, consistent, way better than a Continental, and the coffee is passable. It’s not trying to be fine dining and it doesn’t need to be. For an overnight where you want to sit down for thirty minutes and not chase a 5-year-old around a food court, it’s genuinely great.

Location — Walking Distance and Within an Hour

You’re at the airport. That’s the point. But here’s what the map doesn’t tell you: there’s a service road that drops you at the rental-car returns in about five minutes with almost no traffic. After three years of doing the terminal-loop rental return with two tired kids, discovering this felt like unlocking a cheat code.

If you’re adjusting time zones, there’s a shoreline trail across the road — easy walking distance, with planes landing over the bay. Amelia runs it at 6am when she’s time-zone-broken. It’s quieter and more beautiful than any airport-adjacent stretch has any right to be.

The math is simple:

• Ask for a refreshed room — they’re meaningfully nicer than the older category. Platinum Elite gave us one without pushing; otherwise ask.
• Book a rate with self-parking included — parking à la carte adds up fast.
• Use the rental-car service road — five minutes, no traffic, and you’ll never go back to the terminal loop.
• Get coffee at the lobby Starbucks — buffet on the Platinum benefit, real latte afterward.
• The shoreline trail across the road is the best airport-hotel morning walk we’ve found.
